Moritz Waldemeyer’s latest project for Ingo Maurer is a parabolic mirror that reflects digital flames from its hexagonal surfaces. A custom made LED display is placed in the mirror’s focal point, from where the light is reflected and multiplied into dozens of digital flames. The resulting effect resembles the facets of a diamond, but one that is inverted, concave instead of convex. This jewel-like beauty combines the quaint charm of candlelight with futuristic feel of intricate geometric lines. A second light source uses the parabolic geometry to create a pool of white light below the fixture without ever interfering with the magic of the faceted flames.

Designers Moritz Waldemeyer and Erevos Aether have teamed up to make the dazzling outfits for a performance to celebrate the presentation of Audi’s highly anticipated new A3 e-tron prototype, on behalf of the show productions agency Quintons Concept.

The dance troupe’s costumes give a dynamically futuristic image of the chic and adventurous, contemporary man. Using the latest technology, technical fabrics and high quality sports fabrics, the elegant suits have a decidedly vehicular twist, in honour of Audi’s electric prototype, the inspi- ration behind the designer’s work. It is as if Audi had designed ultramodern suits styled after its cars. Moritz Waldemeyer has lined the suits with LED lights, in the style of the Audi’s trademark LED daytime running lights, which shine in synchronization with the music as the dancers dance.

Sapphire is the newest entry in Beck’s beer family: a fresh flavor together with a new bottle image inspired by the rarest gemstones. The product is being introduced around the United States throughout 2013. A series of pop-up locations – starting January 17th in Los Angeles, Santa Monica Boulevard– are chosen to day-view the new beer to the American public.

Becks Sapphire Installation

In this occasion, the renowned communication agency ‘Group360 Worldwide’ asked Moritz Waldemeyer to create a unique environment inspired by the black exterior face of the bottle. ‘When I’ve first put my mind into the project’, says Moritz, ‘I pictured a modern luxurious space which recreates the preciousness of sapphires’. Alternations of geometric figures are irregularly positioned to form a cutting edge structure. The artist recreated a crystal cave composed of mirrors that reflect the light in order to transmit the visitor in a surreal landscape.

Becks Sapphire Installation – detail

The goal is to transform an environment using simple triangular shapes that recall the precious stones carved in the rock, ‘leading the viewer through a journey into luxury and elegance’. He explores use of the same geometric shape to render multiple spatial dimensions within the same architecture: triangles become pyramids and the pyramids intersect each other exploiting three-dimensions. An avant-garde work of art that matches Beck’s idea of sophisticated enviroment for the launch of a different type of beer.

Philip Treacy’s catwalk show at the Royal Courts of Justice marks the master hat designer’s return to London after 12 years in the most hotly anticipated event of London Fashion Week 2012. The show, sponsored by Swarovski, includes a specially chosen selection of Treacy masterpieces and a collection of original Michael Jackson stage outfits designed by Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins. An eye-catching and technologically advanced piece is a new design by Moritz Waldemeyer.

A delicate illuminated basket type sculpture extends down from the head to envelope the model’s entire body. Studio Waldemeyer’s solution was to weave an intricate mesh of threads around a specially designed styrofoam core. The threads are soaked in resin, which when dry are rigid allowing the design to be complex, but also very light.

The result is an object that looks impossible – especially when you think that is supported by the head alone. 6000 LED lights integrated into the webbed surface programmed with animated sequences enhance the illusion of weightlessness. When the lights shine directly out into the audience the structure itself becomes invisible – the model appears enshrouded in a floating cloak of light.

Philip Treacy’s Shroud hat, photograph by Chris Moore

Moritz again drew on the idea of weightlessness when asked to design his own piece for the show. This time a continuous band of light sweeps around the head with no apparent physical connection to the wearer at all. This uncanny effect is achieved courtesy of a carefully positioned propeller headpiece – each blade is finished at the end with LED lights. When in full motion the blades themselves disappear leaving only an ethereal halo of light. It’s millinery for the 21st Century.

EVERYTHINGS IS ILLUMINATED

As part of the Olympic closing ceremony, Moritz Waldemeyer conceived a vibrant collection of LED-embedded carnival costumes for the hand over to Rio de Janeiro, – proudly honoring the brazilian culture. One hundred and forty LED-encrusted carnival outfits, miraculously programmed to pulse to the beat of eighty Brazilian drummers. For the Paralympics Moritz executed Sixteen banners, lit with LED lights. Each banner transformed into a mobile display that became an integral part of the choreography. The graphic innovation was rendered by the LEDs arranged on the banners, which reproduced a new and unique design – the ‘scale’ lines – recreating appealing animations and lights moving simultaneously with the music.

“Have you ever been in a certain mood and reached for a song you’d hoped would ‘fit’ but couldn’t find anything? Or maybe you’d like to hear a song on a particular topic? I’m curious to know if there’s a song ‘void’. Maybe there are many?”

These were the questions that lead British singer-songwriter Imogen Heap to collaborate with designer Moritz Waldemeyer. The outcome is the Listening Chair, an egg-shaped chair which doubles as a recording studio, designed to travel around the world asking people the question: “What is the song that still needs to be written?”

The listening chair with Imogen Heap

The Listening Chair was presented at the Sound Summit in Sidney, and will now travel to London and Edimburgh. Moritz Waldemeyer served as the project manager of the chair, with the collaboration of Middlesex University.

This travelling recording studio features speakers on either side with volume control, an integrated camera, microphone and LED strips that turn on when the user records his or her answer. Once the message is recorded, the user can choose to make it public, uploading it onto The Listening Chair website. The collected recordings will be gathered in a documentary, and Heap will use these “seeds” as the basis of an a capella track in her new album.

Candles in the Wind is a revolutionary new lighting concept, using modern LED technology to faithfully recreate the experience of light from the ancient past – the simple yet infinitely complex candle flame. The design is pure and minimal: a bare circuit board featuring the latest in micro-processor technology paired with 256 high quality LEDs per candle is all it takes to evoke the natural flow and flicker. When seen from a short distance, the light is indistinguishable from the real thing, thanks to a perfect match of the light colour of the LEDs. Closer inspection reveals the low resolution charm of the digital display.

Candles in the Wind – installation of 100 candles

The concept was introduced to the public during Ingo Maurer’s 2012 Milan show and received a fantastic response. The LED display shows video footage from a real candle; a smart random algorithm makes sure the sequence of movements never repeats to recreate the natural behaviour faithfully.

Candles in the Wind – close up of electronic candle

The single version of the candle was introduced under the name “My New Flame” in November 2012 with launch events at Ingo Maurer’s showrooms in Munich and New York. It is now available through Ingo Maurer’s dealer network.

A snow covered landscape is one of the most magical things that never seizes to enchant people, so when Time Square shopping centre asked for a winter installation for their large atrium space, the inspiration came from the infinite varieties of crystal shapes that create this natural miracle. At first glance this complex 3-dimensional constellation appears to be a clean abstract sculpture, perfectly in tune with the surrounding architecture. It has a hint of manga-esque SciFi, a frozen comet traveling at galactic speed.

Moving towards the magic spot the crystal geometry is slowly taking shape

However there is a secret hidden within the 3D composition: the galleries and floors of the shopping center allow for many different viewing angles and vantage points, and hidden and yet in plain view there is one magic spot that unlocks the secret of the snowflake.

Snow flake installation as seen from the magic vantage point

The installation is illuminated by a large cinema projector and as a festive message it plays video footage from London, that was treated by a specifically designed kaleidoscopic filter, to match the hexagonal symmetry of the snow crystal.
