Candles in the Wind

Candles in the Wind is a revolutionary new lighting concept, using modern LED technology to faithfully recreate the experience of light from the ancient past – the simple yet infinitely complex candle flame. The design is pure and minimal: a bare circuit board featuring the latest in micro-processor technology paired with 256 high quality LEDs per candle is all it takes to evoke the natural flow and flicker. When seen from a short distance, the light is indistinguishable from the real thing, thanks to a perfect match of the light colour of the LEDs. Closer inspection reveals the low resolution charm of the digital display.

The concept was introduced to the public during Ingo Maurer’s 2012 Milan show and received a fantastic response.

The LED display shows video footage from a real candle; a smart random algorithm makes sure the sequence of movements never repeats to recreate the natural behaviour faithfully.

When seen from most vantage points in the atrium the installation appears abstract

A snow covered landscape is one of the most magical things that never seizes to enchant people, so when Time Square shopping centre asked for a winter installation for their large atrium space, the inspiration came from the infinite varieties of crystal shapes that create this natural miracle. At first glance this complex 3-dimensional constellation appears to be a clean abstract sculpture, perfectly in tune with the surrounding architecture. It has a hint of manga-esque SciFi, a frozen comet traveling at galactic speed.

However there is a secret hidden within the 3D composition: the galleries and floors of the shopping center allow for many different viewing angles and vantage points, and hidden and yet in plain view there is one magic spot that unlocks the secret of the snow flake.

The installation is illuminated by a large cinema projector and as a festive message it plays video footage from London, that was treated by a specifically designed kaleidoscopic filter, to match the hexagonal symmetry of the snow crystal.

 Intern wanted: Ideally a student with a product design or engineering background with an interest in the innovative use of technology. You need to have some knowledge of 3D design, and some skills in preparing product concepts and presentations. Further technical skills like programming and electronics are a bonus but not necessary. And don’t worry, you won’t have to perform any high kicks…

Following the invitation of ModaFad to participate in their grand fashion extravaganza at Fabrica Moritz Barcelona, we assembled a team of the world’s top martial arts talent: Chloe Bruce, Steven Coleman and Adam Rae. The just recently inaugurated Jean Nouvelle masterpiece proved to be the perfect backdrop for our mix of young fashion, light design and world class swordsmanship. The fashion audience was blown away by the display of Chloe’s explosive energy, Steve’s expert weapon’s routines and Adam’s artful choreography in a life performance. Behind the scenes we interacted with the incredible structures and textures of the brewery to create a completely new take on architectural photography. When Camron PR were looking for an innovative Christmas card they commissioned me to create an original light painting in front of a London landmark. Inspired by the London Olympics 2012 I teamed up with one of the UK’s top gymnasts: Hasit Savani who performed with our newly developed full colour LED sword at various locations along the South Bank.

This project is an evolution of a chain of performance, film and photography experiments that all involve the usage of specially designed LED objects to trace the motion of a performer. Starting from the ancient Chinese martial art of Wushu, we have now developed the world’s most high tech LED sword capable of producing full colour light traces with high speed refresh rates.

Using the persistance of vision of the human eye, the LED swords can produce surprising visual magic in live performances and create stunning traces in video and photography. We are planning to continue the development of this technique to push the envelope of these visual effects.

The ultimate football supporter’s outfit completely covered in full colour and full video capable LED pixels. This outfit was created for a series of short Eletrabel TV ads created by Czar in Belgium. The jacket features a new and improved LED system, developed from the previous Take That and Will.I.Am outfits.

What to do if you are vegan and your next TV appearance calls for a pair of hand made leather Chanel shoes? You create a replica in animal friendly materials. And since the original shoes feature a pair of strong LED head lights, there is only one place that can turn this around in time for the show. Let’s hope Karl Lagerfeld can forgive us for laying our hands on his design…

Take That are back on tour to the delight of their fans and just before kicking off in Sunderland they presented a tough challenge to us: make 5 video capable LED stage costumes in record time for the first performance. No sane person would take such a project on, but we do like the odd 72h shift and assembled a dream team of engineers, product designers and fashion specialists and got to work.

Black Eyed Peas - Will.I.Am - LED video jacket during fitting in Dallas hotel room

During the current world tour of the Black Eyed Peas lead singer and front man Will.I.Am is sporting the most advanced jacket ever to come from Saville row: a hand tailored jacket made by Hardy Amis’ master taylor Jan Cicmanec and completely covered in our in house developed LED video system. The jacket is capable of displaying animations at video speed from a built in SD card.
